What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage? What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage and why is it important? Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle yet very effective , therapeutic technique that helps stimulate the lymphatic system, a key part of our immune system. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste, toxins, and excess fluids from the body. Unlike most other body work treatments MLD does not require a deep touch instead its magic is in using light, rhythmic strokes using specific hand techniques that are used to stretch the skin while using directional push to stimulate lymphatic fluid just below the skins surface. With the proper technique, effective flow of lymph fluid is important for maintaining overall health, as it can support the body’s ability to heal by improving circulation, immune function, and reduce discomfort caused by pain and/or conditions like swelling or inflammation. It also helps promote relaxation reduce stress, and improve the body’s ability to recover from surgery or injury. In essence, MLD supports a healthier, more balanced body by ensuring that the lymphatic system functions at its best.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage safe/right for me? Generally speaking MLD is safe for most people. Below we have included a few relative and absolute contraindications if in doubt of whether it is right for you always consult with your doctor prior to starting any treatments is an important step to ensure safety and proper care. Absolute contraindications for manual lymphatic drainage.  * 1st trimester of pregnancy  * Acute infections/inflammation *  (Those with active cold, infection to a body area like cellulitis and those with fever should not be receiving MLD treatment. Inflamed/infected skin tissue should not receive MLD) * Acute deep vein thrombosis * Those with acute DVT should avoid MLD as the therapy may dislodge and lead to complications.   * Congestive heart failure * Those that are unmedicated and/or with active swelling/edema from congestive heart failure are not able to receive MLD.  * Renal disease/failure  * Written doctor approval must be submitted prior to receiving MLD as severity of cases may be different and MLD could potentially worsen the condition by increasing the fluid load on already compromised kidneys, causing further complications with fluid management.  Relative Contraindications for manual lymphatic drainage. * Pregnancy after the first trimester MLD is safe however please mention before your sessions begin so we can tailor your treatment to fit your needs best. * Acute /chronic congestive heart failure  * Current cancer diagnosis * Malignant lymphedema caused by active cancer  * Although we do not offer Complete Decongestive Therapy we are happy to offer MLD as a service to anyone that is experiencing lymphedema if it is recommended by a doctor. * Clients 60 and older   * Recent abdominal surgery that is not related to a plastic surgery procedure. * Those with uncontrolled/unmedicated hypertension as increased lymph flow may not be the best we want to be sure we don't over do it for you. * During menstruation * The abdominal area can be avoided please let me know prior to your session so we can modify your session.

What should I wear to my appointment. Loose fitting clothes is best as tight fitting clothes impairs lymphatic flow and you dont want to stop any of that magic as you leave your appointment. During your appointment you can dress to your comfort level. Draping will be provided but the less resstricted your body is the better this will be for drainage. Breast tissue is full of lymphatic vessels and aids in draining the deep lymphatic system of the upper thorax but if you are uncomfortable with the breast areas being drained/manipulated please let us know so we can serve you best! Your comfort is a priority!

What can I do to prepare for my appointment? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water and electrolyte rich foods and drinks will serve you. Gentle movement is always a plus to keep things moving and draining. Limiting caffeine and heavy meals before and after will help you feel the best.

What can I expect after my appointment? Although results may very from person to person many might experiencing detox systems as lymphatic work can move a lot of stagnant energy and waste from the body. Energy may be low the day of and for a day or two after. Hydration is KEY! Not only before but also after. Lighter meals and food and drink in electrolytes are also a plus. Intense workouts before and after are not recommended but gentle movements and walking are great ways to move and continue to encourage lymph flow.

Do you treat lymphedema patients? Although Freshta is certified in Complete Decongestive Therapy we are currently not currently offering anything other that MLD at this time.
